Next Gen Scientists Foundation offers interns an incredible chance to pursue their passion for life science by conducting a project of their choice at their preferred laboratories. We conducted exclusive interviews with our interns and gathered insights into their unique experiences. Read below to know more about Smruti’s journey!
This program is really great for undergraduate students. Personally, I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to participate and contribute to this initiative. It’s not just about gaining valuable experience; it’s about being part of something bigger.
~Smruti
Q: What do you study and where?
Smruti: I’m a 2nd year Biology Major student doing an integrated BS-MS Degree at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata.
Q: How was your experience attending NGS Internship Program?
Smruti: The experience was incredible, and I’m deeply grateful for the chance to be involved in this program. Being part of the NGSF internship funding initiative not only provided me with essential financial support but also enabled me to pursue my research interests in my preferred laboratory setting.
Moreover, the program helped me discover my passion for scientific communication. Writing an article for NGSF opened my eyes to the significance of science communication in today’s world. After writing my first blog for NGSF, I became deeply interested in scientific writing and communication. It made me realize the importance of bridging the gap between scientific discoveries and the wider community.

Q: Who was your PI and what was your host institute?
Smruti: My PI was Dr. Samarendra Singh from Cell cycle and Cancer Lab, Department of Biotechnology, Banaras Hindu University,Varanasi.
Q: What was your Internship project work?
Smruti: During my summer internship, I learned about Cervical cancer research and how miRNAs (microRNAs) are involved with cancer and cell cycles. Even though it was a short internship, I got to try out basic lab techniques like extracting DNA from bacteria, estimating proteins, separating proteins, purifying proteins, and isolating RNA. These skills were like building blocks for understanding more about cancer biology.
Q: How did you enjoy working on the Internship Project?
Smruti: During my first internship, I was pretty clueless about lab techniques. But the lab members really had my back. They spent two whole months helping me understand the basics and getting my head around everything. They made sure I had a rock-solid foundation and understand every concepts.
I had a great time during my first summer internship. The people in the lab were super friendly and made me feel right at home. It was awesome to have such supportive teammates who helped me with everything, even the little stuff I wasn’t sure about. I learned a lot and got a solid foundation in lab techniques and work ethics. Big shoutout to the lab members along with my PI for making it such a great experience!
Q: How was the city you moved in? Did you face issues?
Smruti: Varanasi, a city that pulsates with vibrant energy and rich cultural heritage. was the city I moved to. The experience was worth remembering. Although I encountered a few challenges with the hostel accommodation and hot weather.
Q: Would you recommend your fellow students to apply to NGS Internship Program?
Smruti: Absolutely! I’m all in on this program and have already spread the word to all my friends. I’d totally recommend it to any undergrads out there. It’s seriously worth checking out!
Q: Any other comments/observations/suggestions you would like to share?
Smruti: In India, especially for undergraduates, securing a paid internship is quite challenging. The NGSF program, however, is changing the scenario by making it feasible for students to gain valuable experience while receiving financial support.
